This year-long training will offer four hands-on workshops and corresponding webinars designed to prepare members for the mandatory ICD-10 conversion on Oct. 1, 2013. The first workshop was held on Nov. 29 at the Montage, Indianapolis, and the corresponding webinars were held Jan. 12 and Jan. 17. The first workshop provided participants with planning and implementation tools including developing a budget, timelines, and performing a gap analysis. The following webinars are two hours long and will provide a comprehensive overview of the day-long workshop. Recorded webinars can also be purchased for download. The second workshop will be held March 8 and will walk participants through the documentation challenges associated with ICD-10 implementation. Each workshop includes a presentation from a local hospital that started the implementation process. Participants will learn from the hospital’s successes and pitfalls and can use that example when developing a plan. The speaker will share translatable experiences and process details that can be implemented in facilities that have begun the ICD-10 transition or are just beginning. TRAINING SERIES DATES Every workshop will feature hands-on materials and tools for participants and each successive workshop builds on the previous. OTHER ICD-10 TRAINING AND RESOURCES Get Prepared: Register for the Next ICD-10 Workshop, May 16 The third hands-on workshop in IHA's ICD-10 Training Series will be May 16 at the Montage, Indianapolis. Despite the delay, the switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 coding is inevitable and it's imperative that hospitals prepare and create a comprehensive plan. Several staff members across hospitals will need training and the third workshop will walk participants through building a comprehensive training plan. Participants will learn how many training hours to allocate for staff, determine the type of training for each person and how to effectively measure outcomes. Complete AHA's ICD-10 Survey The American Hospital Association is asking hospitals to complete an online survey to help the association understand hospitals' readiness and progress in preparing for the implementation of the ICD-10 coding system by Feb. 24. The survey will help AHA determine the best way to assist members, and the information collected will be used to inform their advocacy efforts. AHA member CEOs have been sent a letter with the survey, which also can be accessed at www.healthforum.com under "AHA Data." IHA and Ivy Tech Offer Additional ICD-10 Training IHA and Ivy Tech have joined to offer refresher anatomy, physiology and pharmacology training for hospitals ICD-10 coding staff. Ivy Tech has contracted with Career Steps to offer the program and has scheduled two demos for hospitals to learn about the offering. ICD-10 NEWS HEADLINES April 25, 2012 - Comment Period to Delay ICD-10 Now Open HHS Secretary Sebelius announced a proposed rule that would delay the compliance date for ICD-10 from October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2014. This proposed rule has been posted to the Federal Register, which marks the beginning of the 30-day comment period, with all comments due to HHS no later than 5 p.m. ET May 17. The 30-day comment period for this rule is an important way to provide feedback to HHS about the proposed ICD-10 compliance date change. Submit comments by following the ''Submit a comment'' instructions at regulations.gov.
Feb. 15, 2012 - CMS Re-Examining Pace of ICD-10 Implementation The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services plans to announce a rulemaking aimed at health care providers concerned about meeting the October 2013 deadline for implementing the ICD-10 coding system to report diagnoses and procedures on health care claims. CMS Director Marilyn Tavenner told reporters CMS would announce its intentions in the next few days through the rulemaking process. IHA will provide more information as it becomes available. Feb. 15, 2012 - Second ICD-10 IHCP Provider Readiness Survey Now Available The second ICD-10 IHCP Provider Readiness Survey is now available through Feb. 21 in the News and Announcements section at Indianamedicaid.com. The objective of the survey is to determine if providers are impacted by the implementation of ICD-10 codes and to help the ICD-10 project teams understand the extent of impact and all efforts to prepare for the transition. Individuals responsible for planning, implementing and/or managing the transition from ICD-9 coding to ICD-10 coding should complete the survey.
