IHA President Responds to Medicaid Cuts
The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration has announced a 5 percent across the board Medicaid payment cut for hospitals, citing revenue shortfalls as a result of the recession and increases in Medicaid enrollment. Indiana Hospital Association President Douglas Leonard issued a statement to the media explaining that these cuts will force hospitals to make difficult choices on which services they can provide. The gap between the cost of providing care and government payments received continues to widen and is unsustainable. Read IHA’s statement.

Stories with IHA’s response to the cuts are appearing in multiple media outlets. View the articles.

Additionally, an interview with Douglas Leonard aired on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. on RTV-6.

IHA Members to Serve on Medicaid Committee
Created by HB 1572 in the 2009 session of the Indiana General Assembly, the Medicaid Managed Care Quality Strategy Committee is tasked with studying and making recommendations in such areas as ED utilization, prior authorization, and standardization of Medicaid managed care forms. Read the original legislation.

Due in part to the special budget session this summer, the MMCQSC may not meet until after the 2010 legislative session. However, HB 1572 establishes this committee through the end of 2010 and it must report its recommendations to the Joint Commission on Medicaid Oversight before Oct.1 of next year. The three hospital-affiliated individuals appointed to this committee include:

  • Matthew R. Gutwein, chairman, Marion County Health and Hospital Corp., which owns and operates Wishard Health Services; and board member, Wishard Foundation.
  • Kristi E. Somes, revenue cycle supervisor, Schneck Medical Center, Seymour.
  • Dr. Stephen D. Tharp, internist, St. Vincent Frankfort Hospital, Frankfort.
