Lean Healthcare Certification Programs

Purdue Healthcare Advisors (PHA) is a not-for-profit outreach initiative for the healthcare industry and  part of the Purdue University-based Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering (RCHE), which serves as a national nucleus for driving high-impact improvement in healthcare delivery. The IHA partnered with RCHE and the Purdue University Technical Assistance Program to start PHA back in 2005. Since then, PHA has worked with almost every hospital in Indiana.

New Lean Healthcare offerings in 2016

In talking with customers and industry experts, it became clear that healthcare organizations are using few, if any, of the statistical tools in Six Sigma. These customers are deriving most of their process-improvement success from team-oriented Lean tools. PHA also found that those healthcare organizations making use of the statistics for process improvement want to go deeper into modeling and data science. In response, PHA’s Process Improvement service line is launching two new training and certification tracks:

Track #1:  Lean First — offers certification as a Lean Practitioner, Advanced Lean Practitioner, and Lean Leader (download flyer). We also are planning to offer less time-intensive certifications for supporting roles, including Lean Daily Improvement Facilitator and Lean Executive Sponsor.

Track #2:  Six Sigma Data Science — offers two certifications, a Green Belt and a Black Belt*. Both of these are front-ended by an online course on statistics, so classroom time can be spent on case studies, modeling, data preparation, and data communication (visual tools).

Both the Lean First and the Six Sigma Data Science programs will include membership in an online Community of Practice devoted to operational excellence in healthcare. More information on these new tracks will be announced this summer. In the meantime, contact Mark Clare, PHA Principal Advisor-Strategic Initiatives, at 765-496-6945 and mclare@purdue.edu with questions or visit http://www.pha.purdue.edu.

*We will no longer offer a Yellow Belt, and recommend instead the Lean Practitioner training. For those working on Lean or Lean Six Sigma certifications, bridges into the new programs will be available.
