Building Patient Safety Awareness
Patient safety is everyone’s job and focus year-round. With that in mind, the IHA patient safety team used Patient Safety Awareness Week as a kick-off to our year-long 2019 patient safety campaign. We have created a Patient Safety Awareness Calendar with events and observances that match the topics in our 2019 Patient Safety Awareness Toolkit. Casey Hutchens, patient safety project coordinator at IHA, says “the goal, this year, is to have special emphasis on patient safety throughout the year by implementing campaigns each month. We are looking forward to partnering with our IHA members to educate their staff as well as the public.” The toolkit can be found on the IHA website at under Patient Safety Awareness Week.

The topics highlighted in the toolkit and the calendar include:

  • Suicide awareness
  •  Infant mortality and safe sleep
  • Tobacco
  • Opioid/drug abuse
  • Antibiotic stewardship
  • Sepsis awareness
  •  Up Campaign – Get Up, Wake Up, Soap Up

As health care providers, we must lead in educating the public about important patient safety issues. Thank you for your continued participation and partnership as we work together to increase patient safety awareness. If you need help accessing any of our patient safety materials, please contact Casey Hutchens.
