Gov. Holcomb's State of the State Addresses Indiana's High Infant Mortality Rate

In his second State of the State address, Gov. Eric Holcomb highlighted several health-related topics and also announced a commitment to reducing Indiana’s infant mortality rate to the lowest in the Midwest by 2024. Holcomb cited SB 360, legislation to formally establish a system for perinatal levels of care, as a key part of this effort. The governor also expressed his strong support for the HIP 2.0 program, which is currently before CMS awaiting renewal. He focused on his administration’s work to combat the opioid abuse crisis and noted that more than half the acute care hospitals in the state are already in the process of integrating the INSPECT prescription drug monitoring system with their EHR systems.

"2018 is all about taking the tools that we’ve been provided and putting them to work with a single purpose in mind—to make life better for all Hoosiers. So, the question before us now is: What must we do to make sure every Hoosier has the opportunity to take part in the growing bounty our state has to offer?" Holcomb said. "That’s why this year, my focus can be summed up in three words: people, people, people."
