On October 9, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced proposed changes to modernize and clarify the regulations that interpret the Physician Self-Referral Law (the “Stark Law") and the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute.
The Indiana Hospital Association applauds HHS Secretary Alex Azar and CMS Administrator Seema Verma for their leadership to make health care affordable by slashing red tape, while also helping to improve outcomes.
Indiana hospitals are committed to bending the cost curve and improving quality. The announcement recognizes that the entire health care system needs to move away from the current model when people see a doctor only when they are sick to value-based care that focuses on prevention, improving quality, and reducing costs.
These new models, which focus on caring for an entire population of people, require collaboration among physicians and other caregivers as well as care coordination. Indiana hospitals are committed to these models and today's announcement provides much needed clarity and flexibility as we respond to the urgent need to transform our health system.
