Last Wednesday, the town of South Bend officially welcomed the addition of Beacon Children’s Hospital to the Memorial Hospital campus. The 100,000 square-foot, $50 million hospital will serve families in 15 counties in Indiana and Michigan. It will include a pediatrics unit, pediatric intensive care unit, pediatric hematology-oncology unit and a new NICU model for mothers to stay with their baby in the same room. Patient families also helped design playrooms, lounges and gathering areas as places of respite from clinical spaces. Patients are expected to start moving into the new hospital next week.
