Ventilator-Associated Events

We can help our patients on ventilators avoid becoming more ill.

Patients on ventilators are at high risk for developing Ventilator Associated Events (VAEs), which can extend the time patients spend on a ventilator, the length of their hospital stay and can lead to a wide range of complications, including aspiration, peptic ulcer disease and gastrointestinal bleeding.

VAEs cost U.S. hospitals between $1.03 billion and $1.5 billion annually. IHA’s partnership with AHA’s HRET HIIN affords participating hospitals access to:

  • Technical assistance
  • Educational opportunities
  • Training
  • Resources
  • Learning collaboratives

The end goal? For each participating HIIN hospital to reduce VAEs by at least 20 percent before September 2018.
